The network security bureau of the Ministry of Public Security has launched a 100-day operation to combat online rumors.
The operation will focus on rumors disrupting the order of cyberspace and incorporate the crackdown with overall cyberspace governance, the ministry said on Friday.
According to the bureau, organizers, planners and major perpetrators of malicious fabrications and the spreading of online rumors will be targeted. Paid posters that use hot topics to attract attention or make profits will also be targeted.
Internet enterprises with prominent problems related to online rumors will be rectified and punished, and some illegal online accounts will be shut down to curb the frequent occurrence of falsehoods.
An official with the network security bureau said apart from combating illegal activities, public security organs will work with other departments to further strengthen comprehensive governance of the Internet ecosystem to protect the legitimate rights and interests of the public.
