An exhibition featuring Chinese original illustrations kicked off at the Memorial of Zhang Leping in Haiyan county, Jiaxing city, Zhejiang province, today. Nearly 1,000 illustration works by different generations of artists are on display, chronicling the development of Chinese illustration over the past 100 years.
Haiyan is the hometown of Zhang Leping (1910-1992), China’s renowned comic artist, best known for his creation of Sanmao. The exhibition is first being presented in Haiyan to honor this prominent artist. After it ends on April 30, it will travel to four other places including Shandong, Tianjin, Sichuan and Beijing.
The exhibition is sponsored by the China National Arts Fund, and is curated by the Communication University of China and its School of Animation and Digital Arts.
The exhibition includes a wide variety of works of different styles and media created by Chinese comic art pioneers, including Feng Zikai (1898-1975), Zhang Leping, and He Youzhi (1922-2016), eminent book authors, including Cai Gao, Feng Jiannan, and Zhu Chengliang, and burgeoning visual artists, including Xiong Liang, Jiu’er, and Huang Li.
