Tibet site offers a glimpse of 7th-9th century cultural exchanges

Wenjiangduo was a political and Buddhist center during the Tubo Kingdom (570-877). From 2021 to 2022, the first scientific archaeological excavation was launched at the Wenjiangduo site in Chushul county, Lhasa, Tibet autonomous region.

A high-level piece of architecture surrounded by four Buddhist pagodas at its four corners and a turtle-footed monument base to its west were unearthed. Cultural relics excavated from the site are made out of pottery, clay, bronze, stone, bone and iron, among which pottery architecture components account for a large number and reflect the close cultural contact between ancient Tibet and the central Tang Dynasty (618-907).
