The Hunan Statistics Bureau recently released the population data of Hunan Province in 2022.
As of the end of 2022, the permanent resident population in Hunan Province was 66.04 million, 180,000 less than the previous year, or a 0.27% year-on-year decrease.
In 2022, 412,000 babies were born around the province, 61,000 less than that in 2021. The birthrate declined to 6.23‰, and the natural growth rate of population dropped 2.31‰.
Gender ratio continued to improve, with the male-to-female ratio hitting 104.84, which was 0.18 lower than that in 2021. Of the population, 33.8 million were male, deceasing by 0.35% year on year; and, 32.24 million were female, down 0.19%. The proportions of males and females to the total population were 51.18% and 48.82%, respectively declining 0.04 percentage points and rising 0.04 percentage points year on year.
The population aged between zero and 14 hit 11.99 million, a drop of 0.71 percentage points over the previous year, or 18.16% in proportion to the total. Those aged between 15-59 reached 40.29 million, a decline of 0.35 percentage points, or 61.01% in proportion to the total. The population aged 60 or above hit 13.76 million, accounting for 20.84% of the total, 1.05 percentage points higher than the previous year. Among the aging population, those aged 65 or above amounted to 10.65 million, accounting for 16.13% and rising 0.67 percentage points.
The urban population reached 39.83 million, accounting for 60.31% of the total, while the rural population was 26.21 million, taking up 39.69%. Compared with 2021, the urbanization rate has increased by 0.6 percentage points, resulting in 289,900 more individuals residing in urban areas and 469,900 less residing in rural areas.
