The Wulin Night Market Women's Federation was established for female vendors working in the market in Gongshu district in Hangzhou late last month, becoming the first night market women's federation in Zhejiang province.
The federation, founded on Feb 27, aims to develop a more legitimate and standard environment that can protect female entrepreneurs' rights, a market environment that promotes fair competition, and a social atmosphere that respects and inspires women's entrepreneurship.
"The establishment of the federation seeks to provide a platform for female vendors to do business and enhance their sense of belonging," said Ye Lianzhong, secretary of the Party branch of Wulin Night Market.
Hu Suyan, the first chairman of the Wulin Night Market Women's Federation, said, "We will gradually improve the federation's service level, strengthen the protection of women entrepreneurs' property rights and the interests of laborers."
Wulin Night Market, which borders West Lake Scenic Area, attracts more than 50,000 people on average every day.
Since its opening in 2013, it has become one of the most popular and bustling night markets in Hangzhou, with its focus on intangible cultural heritage, handicrafts, cultural creativity and specialty snacks.
The number of stalls in the market has increased from 45 to 248 over the past 10 years, owned by 194 stall vendors, including 104 women.
Although the federation was only established last month, its activities to take care of the interests of female entrepreneurs and employees had already begun.
The Wulin Night Market Female Entrepreneurship and Innovation Practice Base was launched on Friday, enabling female vendors and those who want to start a business in the market to receive guidance and training.
"Wulin Night Market has attracted many internet influencers from all over the world, becoming an important landmark of Hangzhou's night economy, and promoting consumption and tourism in Gongshu," said Fan Zheng, deputy director of the Gongshu district government, during the launch ceremony.
"Female vendors account for more than half of the total, and women have played an important role in the innovation of the market," Fan added.
