Construction on the Olympic Sports Center in the Wuxi Economic Development District, Wuxi, East China's Jiangsu province, commenced on Feb 9.
The sports center covers an area of 56.7 hectares, will cost 6.9 billion yuan ($1.02 billion) to build, and is designed to include a 60,000-seat outdoor stadium, a 18,000-seat indoor stadium, a 2,000-seat swimming pool, a fitness center, and a commercial complex.
The sports center will be established in accordance with the highest standards in China and will be able to host large-scale multi-sport events and world-class individual sports events.
A representative from the Wuxi Economic Development District noted that the Olympic Sports Center is conveniently located just 4.5 kilometers from subway line one and 17.5 km from the Wuxi Railway Station.
He also added that the project is expected to boost the further development of the southern area of Taihu New City.
Jiang Wenhao, vice-chairman of the Wuxi Road Running Association, believes that the sports center will bring more international and national events and first-class athletes to Wuxi, provide higher-quality training resources for young local athletes and inspire more locals to exercise.
