Over 2,000 years, 14 ancient irrigation canals dug between the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC) to Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), have witnessed the history of Ningxia. The project to divert water from the Yellow River for irrigation in Ningxia covers an area of 8,600 square meters, and is one of the four main ancient irrigation areas of China. In 2017, it was listed as a World Heritage Irrigation Structure, becoming Ningxia's first world heritage.
