The Wuhan New City key project launch ceremony for the first quarter of 2023 took place in the East Lake High-tech Development Zone (also known as Optics Valley of China, or OVC) on Jan 31.

A total of 34 key projects based in OVC began construction during the event, involving an investment of 39.5 billion yuan ($5.84 billion) and including 10 advanced manufacturing projects, 13 infrastructure projects, six modern service projects and one social welfare project.

The plan for Wuhan New City is a major provincial focus, and about 74.3 percent of OVC's regions are included in the new city, accounting for 53.5 percent of its entire area.

The new city is to be built focusing on six aspects – innovation, transportation, talent attraction, ecological protection and infrastructure safety.

Over the first quarter of this year, the new city registered 30 new projects, involving funds totaling 47.4 billion yuan. Among them, 23 will be constructed in Wuhan, and all of them are based in OVC.

The innovation base for the new city is located in the core area of the East Lake Science City, and will include three major scientific facilities, the East Lake Scientific Forum, scientific communities and supporting infrastructure.
