North China's Shanxi province will restore 500 square kilometers offorest by 2025 to build a stronger ecological security barrier in the Yellow River basin, according to the province's forestry and grassland authority.

Shanxi will implement the forest and grassland ecological protection project, comprehensively increase the Yellow River basin's forest coverage rate, and improve the forest quality. Based on the distribution law of vegetation zones in the basin, the province will scientifically allocate forest and grass vegetation, and restore degraded forests and residual forests.

This will prevent desertification and eventually lead to the comprehensive treatment of 311 sq km of land by 2025.

To achieve the goal, the province plans to increase urban green coverage, continue to improve the rural living environment, build ecologically livable villages, and protect rural ecological resources.

In addition, Shanxi will protect ecological diversity. It will carry out investigations and assessments of the biodiversity in the basin to fully grasp the survival status of endangered species.

With this project, Shanxi province will continue to restore forests and preserve the local wildlife, aiming to promote the special rescue of critically endangered species.
