The Gaojia Opera work Three Successive Promotions (Liansheng sanji) will be staged at the Quanzhou Grand Theater on Dec 20. Telling a satirical comedic story, it starts with a riffraff boy assuming the name of a late candidate and taking the imperial exam in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).
One of the major traditional operas originating from Fujian, Gaojia Opera also prevails in Taiwan and Southeast Asia. It was added to the list of national intangible cultural heritage in 2006.
