Shanghai authorities on Tuesday night reassured the public that the city's tap water production and supply is normal and stable after its announcement earlier in the day about water outages scheduled in some areas for Wednesday caused some residents to hoard drinking water.

The Shanghai Water Affairs Bureau said that the scheduled water outages are due to routine cleaning of pipelines and water tanks, and would only temporarily affect a small number of areas.

The bureau noted that while the Yangtze River Estuary in Shanghai has been experiencing an influx of salt tides since early September, which is a regular seasonal phenomenon, the city's water supply companies have strengthened water quality monitoring and taken measures to ensure the normal production and supply of qualified tap water in Shanghai.
