Huaiju Opera has a history that dates back to the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and combines singing in the Jianhu dialect with dancing. It rose to popularity in Jiangsu and Shanghai in the 1950s. Inspired by folk ballads from regions on the northern bank of the Yangtze River, Huaiju Opera has roots in folk culture, and is listed as an intangible cultural heritage. Jianhu is considered to be the birthplace of Huaiju Opera.
Director Gao Yan worked with Huaiju Opera performers, choreographers, acrobats and multimedia artists to create the show, which will become a regular feature in the Jiulongkou Scenic Area.
