Dai Ailian

Born in Trinidad, West Indies, Dai Ailian (1916-2006) is one of the pioneers as well as founders of Chinese modern dance. She devoted her life to promoting this art. Known as the "Mother of Chinese Dance", she went to London to study dancing with renowned artists such as Anton Dolin (1904-83), Rudolf von Laban (1879-1958) and Mary Wigman (1886-1973). Dai came back to China in 1939 and became the first president of China Dancers Association and the Beijing Dance Academy. Her major works include Nostalgia, Selling Children and Female Gleaners.
