Why Kunming?

Advantageous location

Located in the center of Southwest China’s Yunnan province, Kunming neighbours Myanmar, Laos, and Vietnam, and serves as an international door to open up Southwest China.

As the intersection of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area Economic Circle and the Pan-Pearl River Delta Economic Cooperation Zone, Kunming is an ideal terminal for domestic cities to expand their markets in Southeast and South Asia.

The 1,035-km China-Laos Railway, linking Kunming with the Laotian capital of Vientiane, has enhanced cooperation between China and Southeast Asian countries. So far, 21 provinces have used the railway's cargo services to transport more than 1,200 types of goods to Southeast Asian countries. 

Livable environment

With year-round mild weather and diverse flora and fauna, Kunming is also known as the "city of spring and flowers". Kunming has many natural and cultural landscapes due to its long history and unique geological structure.

As a national tourism city with famous historical heritage, Kunming has diverse natural and cultural charms. Twenty-six ethnic groups, including Han, Hui, Yi, Bai, and Miao, live in Kunming.

Modern industrial system

Kunming has stepped up efforts to cultivate a modern industrial system that is dominated by the modern service industry, based on modern agriculture, and supported by an advanced manufacturing industry.

Industrial clusters of new energy batteries, rare metals, and information manufacturing have also taken shape.

As a nationally famous historical and cultural city, and an important national tourism and business city, it attracts tourists year round.  The tourism industry saw its total revenue hit 273.36 billion yuan($39.27 billion) in 2019, making up 17 percent of the city’s GDP.

The region’s agriculture also boasts robust industries, such as flowers, vegetables, forest fruits, and traditional Chinese medicine.

In 2021, the trading volume of fresh-cut flowers in Dounan Flower Market exceeded 10.26 billion stems, with the trading volume reaching 11.24 billion yuan. The scale ranked second in the world and first in Asia.

Excellent business environment

The business environment has undergone significant new changes, and the efficiency of government services has been comprehensively improved to create a business environment that is benchmarking top place in Yunnan province, and is first-class in China.

Development prospects

It expects the total revenue of its logistics industry to double in three years and exceed 500 billion yuan, equaling half of the total logistics revenue of Yunnan province.

By 2024, Kunming envisages 1,000 international cargo trains and an annual 7 million tons of cargo passing through its railway stations.

Its total import and export volume is expected to double within three years, and in doing so exceed 300 billion yuan.
