Pudong New Area in East China's Shanghai launched a demonstration zone on Aug 31 to boost the development of intelligent connected vehicles (ICVs).
One of Pudong's main industries is the auto industry, which through the years of development has grown into the region's largest industry, accounting for close to 50 percent of the entire output value of Shanghai's automobile sector. Pudong has long been a prominent auto production center.
Pudong is currently home to many original equipment manufacturers in the automobile sector, including SAIC-GM, SAIC Motor Passenger Vehicle Company, Tesla, and IM. Pudong has three major automakers, 120 components and parts companies, and of which have an annual output value of 360 billion yuan ($52 billion).
Pudong has a sound artificial intelligence and integrated circuits base, which offers a solid foundation for the development of ICVs. From sensing, decision-making, and communication to an intelligent cockpit and autonomous driving, the region has developed a robust ecosystem for ICVs.
The demonstration zone is located in the Shanghai Jinqiao Comprehensive Bonded Zone, where ICV enterprises are clustered. The zone is the first pilot free trade zone in China focusing on the development of advanced manufacturing and producer services. As a center for automobile manufacturing, the Jinqiao zone has leveraged its advantages to support the industry of new energy vehicles (NEVs) and ICVs, and aims to build a complete industry chain covering the whole vehicle testing process of NEVs, the R&D and production of core components, and the integration and application of ICV systems.
