Jin Tugen, director of Bainiu village in Lin'an district, Hangzhou, China's first e-commerce village, recently received a letter written using elementary characters but filled with gratitude.

"I am very happy to share with residents of Bainiu village that I have recreated the economic model of your village in Mexico, and our Mexican handicrafts, fruits and other products are selling well online just like your hickories."

The letter was written by Andres Diaz Bedolla, a young Mexican man and founder and CEO of Atomic 88, a company that focuses on giving Mexican producers an opportunity to put their products on the platform and start selling to the world.

Bedolla recalled the day he watched the hickories being made by every household in Bainiu village. It was his first close encounter with a Chinese village and he was impressed by the big houses and private cars, family workshop-style collaboration, and interconnected networks.

But what impressed him most was seeing ordinary local villagers who cannot speak Mandarin but still operate computers skillfully.

He immediately thought of the similarities between Bainiu village and Mexican villages and wondered how he could apply this development model in Mexico.
