Wuxi in East China's Jiangsu province will invest more than 50 million yuan ($7.47 million) this year in the construction of wetland around Taihu Lake.
The city will convert paddy fields along Meiliang and Gonghu lakes, tributaries of Taihu Lake, into wetland in a bid to improve the flood control capacity and natural environment around Taihu Lake.
A total of 2,370 mu (158 hectares) of paddy fields in the Gonghu Bay Wetland protection zone have already been restored into wetland.
The protection zone's water currently satisfies standards for centralized drinking water and more than 35 percent of the zone is covered in water plants.
In the next few years, an eco-friendly greenway around Taihu Lake connecting Nianhua Bay, Lihu Lake Bay, and Gonghu Bay will take shape in Wuxi, allowing local residents to enjoy themselves while admiring the scenic Taihu Lake.
