China will launch a nationwide campaign this year aimed at promoting the mental health of seniors aged above 65, the National Health Commission said on Monday.

The campaign, expected to run through 2025, will cover 1,000 communities in urban areas and 1,000 rural villages. It will primarily serve seniors who are poor, disabled, live alone, have been left behind in the country side, or who have lost their only child.

The commission said that trained health workers will conduct evaluations of the seniors. Those exhibiting mild symptoms of anxiety and depression will receive psychological consultations and follow-up medical visits.

Those found to have cognitive disabilities or moderate to severe health issues will be encouraged to seek professional help at hospitals, the commission said.
