Epidemiologist Wu Zunyou granted Nelson Mandela Award for Health Promotion by WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) granted Wu Zunyou, chief epidemiologist of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, with the Nelson Mandela Award for Health Promotion at the 75th World Health Assembly on May 27. He received the honor for his outstanding achievements in HIV/AIDS prevention and control and health promotion.

In his video address, Wu expressed appreciation to people from all sectors who have long been actively involved in HIV/AIDS prevention and control and anti-discrimination campaigns. He called on all parties to further strengthen health promotion and pledged to continue to devote himself to HIV/AIDS prevention and control and health promotion.

Mxolisi Sizo Nkosi, permanent representative of South Africa to the United Nations Office at Geneva, delivered a speech praising Wu for not only making outstanding contributions to universal health coverage, but also playing an important role in lifting key groups, such as people living with HIV/AIDS, out of poverty.

The Nelson Mandela Award for Health Promotion is one of several fund awards of the WHO granted to individuals or organizations that have made significant contributions to health promotion. The award, established in South Africa in 2019, has been presented annually since 2020.
