May 21: Daily briefing on novel coronavirus cases in China

On May 20, 31 provincial-level regions and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps on the Chinese mainland reported 201 new cases of confirmed infections (20 imported cases, 9 in Fujian province, 4 in Guangdong province, 2 in Jiangsu province, 2 in Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, 2 in Sichuan province and 1 in Zhejiang province, including 1 confirmed case converting from an asymptomatic case in Zhejiang province; 181 indigenous cases, 84 in Shanghai municipality, 58 in Beijing municipality, 32 in Sichuan province, 6 in Tianjin municipality and 1 in Henan province, including 66 confirmed cases converting from asymptomatic cases, 49 in Shanghai municipality, 15 in Sichuan province and 2 in Beijing municipality), 1 death (an indigenous case in Shanghai municipality) and no new cases of suspected infections.

On May 20, 391 patients were released from hospital after being cured (12 imported cases; 379 indigenous cases, 257 in Shanghai municipality, 46 in Beijing municipality, 43 in Zhejiang province, 9 in Guangdong province, 6 in Qinghai province, 5 in Jilin province, 4 in Shandong province, 4 in Henan province, 1 in Shanxi province, 1 in Heilongjiang province, 1 in Hunan province, 1 in Chongqing municipality and 1 in Sichuan province). 28,355 people who had had close contact with infected patients were freed from medical observation. The number of serious cases increased by 12.

As of 24:00 on May 20, 31 provincial-level regions and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps on the Chinese mainland had reported 18,481 cases of imported confirmed infections and no deaths. In all, 18,281 patients had been cured and discharged from hospital. There still remained 200 confirmed cases (including 1 serious case) and no suspected cases.

As of 24:00 on May 20, the National Health Commission had received reports of 222,976 confirmed cases and 5,219 deaths in 31 provincial-level regions and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps on the Chinese mainland, and in all 213,042 patients had been cured and discharged from hospital. There still remained 4,715 confirmed cases (including 292 cases in serious condition) and no suspected cases. 3,973,934 people had been identified as having had close contact with infected patients. 258,717 were still under medical observation.

On May 20, 31 provincial-level regions and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps on the Chinese mainland reported 1,010 new asymptomatic cases (59 imported cases; 951 indigenous cases, 784 in Shanghai municipality, 77 in Sichuan province, 38 in Henan province, 17 in Tianjin municipality, 12 in Beijing municipality, 7 in Jilin province, 5 in Anhui province, 4 in Liaoning province, 2 in Zhejiang province, 2 in Guangdong province, 1 in Jiangsu province, 1 in Shandong province and 1 in Hubei province).

On May 20, 2,897 asymptomatic cases were freed from medical observation (49 imported cases; 2,848 indigenous cases, 2,531 in Shanghai municipality, 75 in Jiangsu province, 67 in Zhejiang province, 52 in Henan province, 24 in Jilin province, 23 in Shandong province, 14 in Liaoning province, 13 in Qinghai province, 11 in Beijing municipality, 8 in Jiangxi province, 7 in Hebei province, 6 in Anhui province, 6 in Sichuan province, 5 in Heilongjiang province, 2 in Guangdong province, 1 in Hubei province, 1 in Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, 1 in Hainan province and 1 in Yunnan province). 67 asymptomatic cases became confirmed cases (including 1 imported case). As of 24:00 on May 20, 41,812 asymptomatic cases were still under medical observation (including 428 imported cases).

As of 24:00 on May 20, 1,488,254 confirmed infections had been reported in the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions and Taiwan province: 331,881 in Hong Kong (9,370 had died and 61,702 had been cured and discharged from hospital), 82 in Macao (all had been cured and discharged from hospital) and 1,156,291 in Taiwan (1,284 had died and 13,742 had been cured and discharged from hospital).
