May 18: Daily briefing on novel coronavirus cases in China

On May 17, 31 provincial-level regions and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps on the Chinese mainland reported 240 new cases of confirmed infections (13 imported cases, 9 in Fujian province, 2 in Guangdong province, 1 in Shanghai municipality and 1 in Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, including 1 confirmed case converting from an asymptomatic case in Guangdong province; 227 indigenous cases, 96 in Shanghai municipality, 52 in Beijing municipality, 49 in Sichuan province, 16 in Tianjin municipality, 9 in Jilin province, 3 in Henan province, 1 in Jiangsu province and 1 in Qinghai province, including 79 confirmed cases converting from asymptomatic cases, 56 in Shanghai municipality, 10 in Tianjin municipality, 9 in Beijing municipality, 2 in Sichuan province, 1 in Jilin province and 1 in Henan province), 3 deaths (all were indigenous cases in Shanghai municipality), and no new cases of suspected infections.

On May 17, 391 patients were released from hospital after being cured (17 imported cases; 374 indigenous cases, 274 in Shanghai municipality, 51 in Beijing municipality, 19 in Jilin province, 10 in Henan province, 6 in Zhejiang province, 6 in Shandong province, 2 in Guangdong province, 1 in Shanxi province, 1 in Liaoning province, 1 in Chongqing municipality, 1 in Sichuan province, 1 in Guizhou province and 1 in Qinghai province). 29,016 people who had had close contact with infected patients were freed from medical observation. The number of serious cases decreased by 42.

As of 24:00 on May 17, 31 provincial-level regions and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps on the Chinese mainland had reported 18,423 cases of imported confirmed infections and no deaths. In all, 18,245 patients had been cured and discharged from hospital. There still remained 178 confirmed cases (no serious cases) and no suspected cases.

As of 24:00 on May 17, the National Health Commission had received reports of 222,370 confirmed cases and 5,217 deaths in 31 provincial-level regions and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps on the Chinese mainland, and in all 211,948 patients had been cured and discharged from hospital. There still remained 5,205 confirmed cases (including 301 cases in serious condition) and no suspected cases. 3,932,700 people had been identified as having had close contact with infected patients. 313,372 were still under medical observation.

On May 17, 31 provincial-level regions and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps on the Chinese mainland reported 1,065 new asymptomatic cases (65 imported cases; 1,000 indigenous cases, 759 in Shanghai municipality, 152 in Sichuan province, 39 in Tianjin municipality, 17 in Beijing municipality, 15 in Anhui province, 8 in Henan province, 3 in Jilin province, 3 in Jiangsu province, 1 in Liaoning province, 1 in Zhejiang province, 1 in Hubei province and 1 in Guangdong province).

On May 17, 3,728 asymptomatic cases were freed from medical observation (75 imported cases; 3,653 indigenous cases, 3,336 in Shanghai municipality, 68 in Liaoning province, 46 in Jiangsu province, 44 in Zhejiang province, 34 in Shandong province, 29 in Henan province, 27 in Jilin province, 22 in Jiangxi province, 20 in Hebei province, 8 in Beijing municipality, 7 in Qinghai province, 4 in Heilongjiang province, 3 in Guangdong province, 2 in Sichuan province, 1 in Shanxi province, 1 in Anhui province and 1 in Guizhou province). 80 asymptomatic cases became confirmed cases (including 1 imported case). As of 24:00 on May 17, 47,718 asymptomatic cases were still under medical observation (including 441 imported cases).

As of 24:00 on May 17, 1,227,865 confirmed infections had been reported in the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions and Taiwan province: 331,724 in Hong Kong (9,361 had died and 61,380 had been cured and discharged from hospital), 82 in Macao (all had been cured and discharged from hospital) and 896,059 in Taiwan (1,135 had died and 13,742 had been cured and discharged from hospital).
