Wuxi in East China's Jiangsu province has been determined to become a national garden city since 2020.
A national garden city is required to have at least 43 percent of its built-up area covered in vegetation, and its per capita green area must be at least 14.8 square meters. In addition, the city should have a healthy, comfortable, and safe living environment.

Last year, Wuxi added 3.5 million square meters of green land and improved landscapes along more than 100 roads.
By the end of 2021, 43.43 percent of built-up areas in downtown Wuxi were covered with vegetation, and the per capita green area reached 14.95 square meters.
However, the city is still not performing well in terms of the construction of public green spaces, environmental protection, and urban management.

In the future, Wuxi plans to build street gardens and small parks to offer more green space and build more garden-style industrial parks and residential communities.
The city will also transform its main roads into landscape corridors with different characteristics and create scenic natural views in residential areas by planting different kinds of vegetation.
