May 17: Daily briefing on novel coronavirus cases in China

On May 16, 31 provincial-level regions and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps on the Chinese mainland reported 175 new cases of confirmed infections (13 imported cases, 9 in Fujian province, 2 in Guangdong province and 2 in Yunnan province, including 1 confirmed case converting from an asymptomatic case in Fujian province; 162 indigenous cases, 77 in Shanghai municipality, 43 in Beijing municipality, 16 in Sichuan province, 11 in Henan province, 7 in Tianjin municipality, 5 in Jilin province, 1 in Jiangsu province, 1 in Fujian province and 1 in Shandong province, including 58 confirmed cases converting from asymptomatic cases, 46 in Shanghai municipality, 8 in Beijing municipality, 2 in Sichuan province, 1 in Jiangsu province and 1 in Shandong province), 1 death (an indigenous case in Shanghai municipality), and no new cases of suspected infections.

On May 16, 476 patients were released from hospital after being cured (26 imported cases; 450 indigenous cases, 315 in Shanghai municipality, 57 in Beijing municipality, 17 in Jilin province, 15 in Guangdong province, 14 in Zhejiang province, 13 in Henan province, 5 in Sichuan province, 3 in Jiangxi province, 3 in Qinghai province, 2 in Liaoning province, 2 in Heilongjiang province, 2 in Shandong province, 1 in Jiangsu province and 1 in Fujian province). 26,116 people who had had close contact with infected patients were freed from medical observation. The number of serious cases decreased by 5.

As of 24:00 on May 16, 31 provincial-level regions and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps on the Chinese mainland had reported 18,410 cases of imported confirmed infections and no deaths. In all, 18,228 patients had been cured and discharged from hospital. There still remained 182 confirmed cases (no serious cases) and no suspected cases.

As of 24:00 on May 16, the National Health Commission had received reports of 222,130 confirmed cases and 5,214 deaths in 31 provincial-level regions and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps on the Chinese mainland, and in all 211,557 patients had been cured and discharged from hospital. There still remained 5,359 confirmed cases (including 343 cases in serious condition) and no suspected cases. 3,915,237 people had been identified as having had close contact with infected patients. 324,926 were still under medical observation.

On May 16, 31 provincial-level regions and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps on the Chinese mainland reported 925 new asymptomatic cases (38 imported cases; 887 indigenous cases, 746 in Shanghai municipality, 73 in Sichuan province, 23 in Tianjin municipality, 22 in Henan province, 9 in Beijing municipality, 6 in Jilin province, 3 in Qinghai province, 2 in Hebei province, 1 in Jiangsu province, 1 in Zhejiang province and 1 in Anhui province).

On May 16, 3,203 asymptomatic cases were freed from medical observation (63 imported cases; 3,140 indigenous cases, 2,872 in Shanghai municipality, 56 in Jiangsu province, 37 in Liaoning province, 37 in Jiangxi province, 32 in Henan province, 27 in Jilin province, 20 in Shandong province, 13 in Hebei province, 12 in Zhejiang province, 10 in Qinghai province, 8 in Beijing municipality, 6 in Heilongjiang province, 3 in Sichuan province, 3 in Yunnan province, 2 in Anhui province and 2 in Guangdong province). 59 asymptomatic cases became confirmed cases (including 1 imported case). As of 24:00 on May 16, 50,461 asymptomatic cases were still under medical observation (including 452 imported cases).

As of 24:00 on May 16, 1,161,996 confirmed infections had been reported in the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions and Taiwan province: 331,657 in Hong Kong (9,361 had died and 61,277 had been cured and discharged from hospital), 82 in Macao (all had been cured and discharged from hospital) and 830,257 in Taiwan (1,097 had died and 13,742 had been cured and discharged from hospital).
