Wuxi in East China's Jiangsu province recently published a five-year plan (2021-25) to promote fitness and transform itself into a sports-friendly city.
This is the third fitness plan that the city has rolled out, with the first published in 2011.
The latest plan states that the per capita sports area in Wuxi will reach 4.15 square meters and more than 47 percent of the city's permanent resident population will exercise regularly by 2025.
In addition, more than 95 percent of Wuxi's population will meet the standards of national physical fitness and there will be 4.5 social sports instructors for every 1,000 local residents by that same year.

To achieve these targets, Wuxi will build more public sports facilities and upgrading existing ones, as well as organize more sports events. This year alone, the city will build and renovate more than 100 sports facilities and organize a fitness festival and a fitness games.
Wuxi had in 2012 created the goal of having a fitness facility located within a 10-minute walk from every resident. Over the past 10 years, the city has built 277 sports parks and 155 soccer fields, as well as paved 2,629 kilometers of fitness paths.
According to the plan, the total output of the sports industry in Wuxi will increase at an annual rate of more than 13 percent from 2021 to 2025.
