Relying on the field archaeology practices of the Shaanxi Academy of Archaeology and scientific and technological research on the protection of cultural relics over the years, the museum takes the development of archaeology as its main focus to display the process of archaeological work, technical methods, and research ideas.

With a total construction area of more than 36,000 square meters, the museum provides tourists and scholars from around the world with a modern and traditional tour and research environment.

The museum features both permanent exhibitions and temporary exhibitions.

Permanent exhibitions display more than 4,000 cultural relics in four categories: archaeological history, cultural genealogy, archaeological discoveries, and cultural preservation technology.

Temporary exhibitions are mainly used to display the latest major archaeological discoveries and research results.

As of 2020, Shaanxi was home to a total of 7.74 million cultural relics and 319 museums, including nine first-level museums, 13 second-level museums, and 17 third-level museums.

In recent years, Shaanxi has carried out cross-border archaeological cooperation with many countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative, which demonstrates Chinese civilization's contributions to the world and advances the field of archaeology in Shaanxi.
