Wuxi in East China's Jiangsu province proposed becoming a no-waste city by 2025, according to a working plan released by the local government on April 18.

By 2025, the total storage and disposal volume of industrial solid waste in Wuxi should achieve zero growth and a life-cycle management system for general industrial solid waste would be established in the city.

The city also hopes to see a huge improvement in the disposal and utilization rates of agricultural waste, setting a precedent for the Yangtze River Delta region, and lead the country in reducing and recycling household and construction waste by 2025.

In addition, Wuxi hopes to be capable of monitoring hazardous waste and evaluating related risks more efficiently by 2025.

To achieve this goal, the city plans to explore low-waste development for its booming integrated circuit industry by reducing and recycling waste and more low-carbon methods of treating organic waste in rural and urban areas.

This no-waste city development model will be piloted this year in Jiangyin, a city administered by Wuxi.

In 2018, China first unveiled its ambition to create zero-waste cities, and in early 2022 Jiangsu released a working plan for the construction of zero-waste cities around the province.

A zero-waste city refers to an advanced urban development and management model that aims to promote green lifestyles, minimize production of waste, strengthen recycling programs and ensure that no harmful waste is released into the environment.
