Beijing named 10 outstanding residents as ethical role models on Feb 21. Honoree Yan Zhuo, a wheelchair curler from the city's Daxing district, is ready to show her extraordinary skills at the upcoming 2022 Winter Paralympics.

Yan was diagnosed with spina bifida at birth, which left her unable to walk. However, this didn't stop her from going to the Shougang Institute of Technology and getting a driver's license.

When she was about to graduate, Yan gained an opportunity to try out for the Beijing Wheelchair Archery Team. She joined the team in November 2013.

Under the guidance of her coach, Yan quickly mastered the essentials of archery. Within half a year, she achieved good results at the National Archery Championships for the Disabled, the 9th National Paralympic Games, and won a bronze medal with a personal best during the World Wheelchair Competition archery events.

Yan thought she would stick with archery. However, once the competition rules were adjusted, she lost the advantage she once had.

But she was not willing to give up her athletic career. She turned her eyes to winter sports. With the help of the Beijing Disabled Persons' Federation, she passed the selection for the capital's wheelchair curling team after three months of training.

Yan overcame various difficulties and found a new passion in wheelchair curling. The hardships she went through made her more confident and strong.

On March 1, 2019, the World Wheelchair Curling Championships opened in Scotland. Yan participated in all 13 games. After 10 days of fierce competition, she and her teammates beat the hosts 5 to 2 and clinched the gold. Yan's championship dream came true.

At present, Yan is preparing for the 2022 Winter Paralympics with the national team. Her biggest wish is to do the best she can, win honors for China, and bring out the best in herself.
