The 2021 World Biotechnology Industry Conference kicked off on Dec 13 in the eastern coastal city of Qingdao, Shandong province.
Experts, scholars and entrepreneurs from 30 countries and regions attended the conference via online and offline channels to share new achievements in the biotechnology industry and promote the development of the industry.
The conference, focusing on cutting-edge topics such as genome engineering and gene editing, new technologies in biomedicine, precision medicine and drug development, and bioinformation technology, set up academician forums, high-end dialogues, symposiums and eight online sub-forums.
More than 60 guests, including Ernst Wagner, academician of the European Academy of Sciences, Asif Ahmed, CEO of Mirzyme Therapeutic, and Li Haibo, professor of the Army Medical University, were invited to make speeches and share their insights into biotechnology innovation and industry development trends.
During his speech, Wang Qingchun, deputy secretary general of the Qingdao municipal government, said that biotechnology is one of the most rapidly developing high and new technologies in the past twenty years. It is being applied more and more widely in agriculture, medicine, food, maritime-related fields and renewable bio-energy, which has far-reaching influence and important significance in boosting the technological level and sustainable development capacity of traditional industries.
In recent years, Qingdao has attached great importance to the development of the biotechnology industry and turned it into an important part of the medical care and health industry, said Wang.
At present, Qingdao is home to 17 universities and research institutions related to biotechnology, 13 key laboratories above the provincial level, and nine engineering technology research centers. Haier's bio-medical internet of things bio-security technology solutions and the stem cell clinical diagnosis and treatment technology of Re-store Biomedicine Group are leading projects in China.
