Themed "Global Public Health Responses and Challenges", a seminar on One Health and tropical diseases, co-organized by the National Institute of Parasitic Diseases (the Chinese center for tropical diseases research) of the China CDC, the Hainan Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention and One Health Center, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) and the University of Edinburgh, was held at the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center on November 12, 2021.
The seminar, moderated by Li Shizhu, deputy director of the National Institute of Parasitic Diseases of the China CDC, focused on the needs and tasks to establish a One Health and tropical disease control and prevention system under the development of the Hainan Free Trade Port.
Feng Zijian, secretary-general of the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association, spoke at the opening ceremony of fighting against the COVID-19 virus based on his firsthand experience and pointed out the special significance of the seminar, held only days after "One Health Day", which falls on November 3 each year.
Professor Guo Xiaokui, executive deputy director of the One Health Center, which was co-founded by SJTU and the University of Edinburgh, introduced the concept, development process and system framework of One Health, and took Hainan as an example to lay out the core ideas and the path to One Health.
Zhou Xiaonong, director of the National Institute of Parasitic Diseases of the China CDC, elaborated on the strategies and measures for malaria eradication in China, as well as the potential problems and challenges after its eradication.
At the roundtable sessions, experts in the fields of disease control, education, clinical and animal diseases analyzed the issues and obstacles facing tropical disease prevention and control in China before offering suggestions and solutions based on the concept of One Health.
