Bayer is an innovation company with a history of more than 150 years and core competencies in the life science fields of health care and nutrition. Bayer has a long history of links with China, going back to 1882, when the company first came to China. With the country now among one of the fastest-growing markets in the world, Bayer has stepped up its involvement in the region. In 2019, Bayer's sales in Greater China reached 3.724 billion euros and as of December 2019, Bayer has more than 9,000 employees in Greater China.
Bayer constructed a pharmaceutical production and packaging facility in Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area between 1995 and 1997, where it manufactures solid and semisolid products. To meet the growing needs of the Chinese market, the company has invested significantly in the extension of the company’s Beijing site. The site has increased its production capacity several times following the extension and has been equipped with state-of-the-art technology.
In 2020, Bayer launched the capacity expansion project of its Pharmaceuticals Product Supply Beijing site to address increased demand for its drug products in China. With an investment of more than 50 million euros ($59.52 million), the planned project is designated to increase production capacity and accelerate the implementation of innovative digital solutions at the Beijing site, and aiming to ensure a reliable supply of high-quality prescription drugs for more Chinese patients.
The new production lines are expected to become operational at the end of 2022. Upon completion, the estimated annual output of the Beijing Site should increase by about 40 percent, which will again reinforce its position among the most advanced production sites of Bayer Pharmaceuticals' global network.
The expansion project covers a production area and a related technical area, and is designed as a world-class manufacturing facility. It includes new high-speed production lines in combination with a sophisticated logistics system.
