The country's first international cruise tourist resort will be built at Shanghai Wusongkou estuary within the next five years, officials announced at the 2021 Wusongkou Forum recently held in the city's Baoshan district.

In response to Shanghai's 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25), which proposes the construction of a world-famous city and a batch of tourist resorts, the master plan of the Shanghai International Cruise Tourist Resort was officially released at the forum.

The resort, which would cover 12.48 square kilometers, will have a 13.5-km waterfront that runs along the junction of the Huangpu and Yangtze rivers. The resort will have four key docks and three theme parks, including the Wusongkou Cruise Port, a sightseeing port, and the Yangtze River Estuary Cultural Park.

After completion, the resort will cater to cruise ships, yachts and various water sports. Consumption options for aquatic sports will also be provided, officials announced.

A historic landmark in Shanghai, Wusongkou was where General Chen Huacheng repelled British invaders in 1842. Its lighthouse remains a national geological landmark.

Wusongkou is also the terminal where vessels from major cruise liners such as Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian have docked since 2011.
