Twenty-nine international students from 11 countries at Beijing International Studies University got to take a closer look at Chinese opera at an event themed “I love Chinese Opera” on Oct 6 during the fifth Chinese Opera Culture Week.
The event was held at a Chinese classical garden, giving it a poetic atmosphere. The garden’s small bridges, flowing water and tilework made it an ideal place to learn about the delicate art of Chinese opera. Some of the students even got to try on the same facial makeup that Peking Opera performers wear.
Actors introduced the students to the history, common roles, and costumes of Peking Opera, as well as the “Thirteen Wonder of Tongguang Famous Actresses”.
One student from Tajikistan said Chinese culture has had a long history and great global impact, especially Chinese opera.
A student from South Korea said she had heard of Peking Opera before coming to study in China. She said the event impressed her and allowed her to see the beauty of Peking Opera for herself.
