New international students started registration for the fall semester at Shanghai University on Aug 30.
This new cohort comprises 479 international degree students from 97 countries, including 234 undergrads, 196 postgraduate students and 49 doctoral students.
According to the university, many of the applicants for its graduate programs are from the top 500 universities on the QS World University Rankings.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, only about 60 international students arrived at the university to finish registration while others did so online. Most of the university’s international students will study online and return to campus only when they receive the necessary permits.
To law student Edoardo Testini, Shanghai is an international metropolis filled with opportunities. He is also heartened by the fact that the university has improved its position in the international rankings.
Federico Fabian Demarco, a postgraduate student from Argentina, has chosen to study the Shanghai dialect at Shanghai University. The Chinese culture enthusiast, who has a talent for linguistics and can speak several Chinese dialects, once helped to develop a dialect phonetic database and has translated many Chinese folk tales. He said that many dialects are in danger of being lost and protecting them is a form of inheriting cultural values.
Under the guidance of counselors, students toured Shanghai University and learned about the environment, history and education philosophy of the university. A Russian student said she likes the university’s motto which urges them to be strong and relentless.
The students also received a gift pack that contains school calendars, maps, stationery, card holders, and anti-epidemic items such as medical masks, hand sanitizers, and disinfectant wipes.
