Donghua University in Shanghai recently held the 2021 Summer Fashion Program which introduced foreigners to wearable 3D printing and traditional Chinese clothing.

The annual program attracted 17 international participants from 14 countries and resulted in the creation of 30 creative design sketches and five 3D printing products.

The students received professional guidance from top design experts and mentors such as Dr. Gu Liwen, an expert in digital fabrication for culture, and designers from Danish Diffus Studio.

The month-long program is part of the Shanghai Summer School project launched by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission to promote cultural exploration and enhance international exchanges.

Here is some feedback from international participants:

"It was great learning about new technology and learning from the mentors who have experience in that. I learned about TPU printing and how other materials are used in fashion. Also unexpectedly, I learned how to make bags. I would recommend this program to those who want to gain new knowledge about future technology rather than just undergo a design course. A teacher from a European school that I have contacted was quite surprised and excited about this program offered by Donghua University. Joining this program will be helpful for my future studies because it allows me to view accessories design and clothing design from a new angle."

"I highly appreciate everyone's efforts in organizing this program. It wasn't an easy journey but it was definitely a priceless experience! I would attend the program again and recommend it to others. It was nice to learn about the facilities on Donghua University campus and meet such wonderful professionals and promising young peers. The competition is tough but I believe that learning through practical work is the most efficient way to learn!"

"This workshop has taught me not only about teamwork, but also introduced me to a new area in fashion that I have never explored before. I am grateful for the knowledge I have gained about 3D printing materials and how I can incorporate them into any design. As I approach my fourth and final year in fashion studies, I am happy to know that I have learned new skills, new trends, new styles, and a new form of communication both through word and cohesive designs."
