Mongolian embroidery is characterized by bright colors, lively stitches and clear lines. It has been used by Mongolian people since ancient times to adorn their clothes, accessories, shoes, boots, socks and pouches. The embroidered pieces are also seen decorating the door curtains of yurts, saddles and felts.
There are several major skills employed in their works. First, the physical features of subjects are highlighted through embellishments. The cattle’s horns and camels’ humps, for example, are often exaggerated, while their other limbs are simply embroidered.
Compositions showcasing contrasting elements are also very important. Big and small, less and more, straight and curved – artists make use of contrasting elements to create visually stunning embroidered works.
Thirdly, abstract designs are often utilized to demonstrate the unique attributes of objects or characters. For example, butterflies are usually represented with cross-shaped patterns or lines.
