Penglai district, one of the world's seven grape coastal production areas, is gaining global attention as local authorities seek to integrate the development of the wine industry and local sectors.
Located in the city of Yantai, Shandong province, Penglai is currently home to 62 wine production companies with an annual production capacity of 140,000 kiloliters. The annual revenue of the wine industry currently stands at 4.5 billion yuan ($697.9 million).
In 2020, Penglai was awarded the title of "China Wine Industry Integration Development Demonstration Zone". It has formed a complete industrial chain integrating seedling cultivation, wine raw materials, machinery and equipment, packaging materials, logistics and transportation.
As a fast-growing region, Penglai has been producing wines that have been highly rated in international and domestic wine contests in recent years. More than 400 wines from the region have been exported to France, the United States, Singapore, Canada, South Korea, and Britain.
Penglai has to date developed 12 tourism products featuring wine culture, including high-quality wine tours, wine education and wine tasting. Activities such as grape harvesting festivals and wine culture exhibitions have also proved to be integral to the development of its tourism industry.
