Shanghai is a city with a quality of life that meets the world's highest standards and residents have a strong sense of fulfillment and happiness, according to a report released by the Party School of Shanghai Committee of Communist Party of China on Friday.

The report was based on an evaluation of four primary indicators measuring life quality - healthcare and environment, safety and work-life balance, public services and city governance, as well as lifestyle and economic conditions.

A questionnaire survey involving 2,600 residents was conducted last year, according to Yu Jianning, the writer of the report.

"Shanghai takes the lead in China in terms of improving people's living standards, and the report is aimed at inspiring and guiding domestic cities to do the same," said Pan Wenxuan, who is in charge of the survey.

The report states that the city has been building a comprehensive system to guarantee the health of the entire population. In 2020, the average life expectancy of Shanghai residents reached 83.7 years, ranking first in the country. The proportion of the number of Shanghai citizens regularly taking part in exercises has also increased year after year and currently stands at 43.7 percent.

In terms of green development, the air quality index was classified as "good" and "moderate" for 87.2 percent of last year. Meanwhile, the recycling rate of waste in the city has reached 38.8 percent.

The city is also deemed as one of the safest cities in the world as the local legal system has been continuously improved over the years, according to the report.

Moreover, digitization has largely shaped residents' lives and provided them with smarter, more accurate, and convenient public services. From shared offices to shared public transport, the sharing economy has been fully integrated into the lives of city residents, the report added.
