The Memorial of the Southward Evacuation of the Palace Museum Collections recently opened in Chongqing. Covering 2,500 square meters, it vividly presents the relocation of the cultural relics from Beijing’s Palace Museum during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1931-45).
Chongqing was a major stop during the southward evacuation of the cultural relics from Beijing. The memorial was built on the site of the storehouse of a Swedish company, where 3,694 crates containing precious works of art from the Palace Museum collections were stored for safety.
