Located in the northwestern area of Chengdu, capital city of Sichuan province, the Jinsha site is one of the ruins of the capital city of the ancient Shu Kingdom and features the distinct Shu culture that emerged during the Shang and Zhou dynasties (c.16th century-256 BC). It is famed as the first great discovery in China in the early 21st century and as a central settlement site second only to Guanghan Sanxingdui in scale in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River.
Covering more than five square kilometers, the ruins have been proven to be areas of sacrifice, a palace, tombs and residences, and were home to the densest ivory and richest golden and jade wares of their kind in the world during the same period. The Jinsha site constitutes the four developmental phases of ancient Shu civilization with the prehistoric city groups in the Chengdu Plain, the Sanxingdui site and the ship-shaped coffin of the Warring States Period (475-221 BC).
Occupying nearly 300,000 square meters, the park employs large span steel structures in its major parts and organically combines the archaeological site, relics and other cultural landscapes to ensure protection of the wholeness of the ruins. Scientific and professional methods also help preserve the site for ongoing research.
