May 24: Daily briefing on novel coronavirus cases in China

On May 23, 31 provincial-level regions and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps on the Chinese mainland reported 18 new cases of confirmed infections (all were imported cases, 3 in Shanghai municipality, 3 in Guangdong province, 3 in Sichuan province, 2 in Shaanxi province, 1 in Tianjin municipality, 1 in Inner Mongolia autonomous region, 1 in Heilongjiang province, 1 in Jiangsu province, 1 in Fujian province, 1 in Hunan province and 1 in Gansu province), 1 new case of suspected infections (an imported case in Shanghai), and no deaths. 8 patients were released from hospital after being cured. 763 people who had had close contact with infected patients were freed from medical observation. The number of serious cases remained unchanged.

As of 24:00 on May 23, 31 provincial-level regions and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps on the Chinese mainland had reported 5,970 cases of imported confirmed infections and no deaths. In all, 5,676 patients had been cured and discharged from hospital. There still remained 294 confirmed cases (including 3 cases in serious condition) and 2 suspected cases.

As of 24:00 on May 23, the National Health Commission had received reports of 90,991 confirmed cases and 4,636 deaths in 31 provincial-level regions and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps on the Chinese mainland, and in all 86,030 patients had been cured and discharged from hospital. There still remained 325 confirmed cases (including 3 cases in serious condition) and 3 suspected cases. 1,019,971 people had been identified as having had close contact with infected patients. 6,308 were still under medical observation.

On May 23, 31 provincial-level regions and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps on the Chinese mainland reported 22 new asymptomatic cases (18 imported cases; 4 indigenous cases, 3 in Guangdong and 1 in Liaoning province). 8 asymptomatic cases were freed from medical observation (including 7 imported cases) and 2 (imported cases) became confirmed cases. As of 24:00 on May 23, 388 asymptomatic cases were still under medical observation (including 363 imported cases).

As of 24:00 on May 23, 16,204 confirmed infections had been reported in the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions and Taiwan province: 11,832 in Hong Kong (210 had died and 11,553 had been cured and discharged from hospital), 50 in Macao (49 had been cured and discharged from hospital) and 4,322 in Taiwan (23 had died and 1,133 had been cured and discharged from hospital).
