Shandong University Museum has two sites, one in Jinan, the capital city of Shandong province, and the other in Qingdao on its Qingdao campus. Each site features displays of the university’s history, and exhibitions of historical and cultural relics, archaeological finds, and fossils. The museum has a permanent collection of more than 40,000 artifacts and various specimens.

The museum is the country’s biggest university museum in terms of the construction area of a single building and the only national first-class historical and archaeological museum among all the university museums in China.

Every university museum carries the unique story and reflects the unique charm of its institution. The Shandong University Museum is not an exception. What is worth noting is that most of its cultural relics were unearthed by archaeology students and teachers over the years. All kinds of fine cultural relics like porcelains, bronze wares, tiles, calligraphy and paintings are displayed here, encapsulating the archaeological achievements of Shandong University and the lasting regional culture.

The permanent exhibition of this museum encompasses three themes: excavated cultural relics, calligraphies and paintings and archaeological achievements. Calligraphy and paintings of the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1644) and other private collections donated by Han Lianqi (1909-90) and Zhang Weihua (1902-87), two professors of history who worked at Shandong University, are displayed in the permanent exhibition of the Qingdao branch.
