Great Wall Motors unveiled a brand called Tank at the Shanghai auto show, as part of its efforts to go upward in the competitive auto market.
The new brand has an ambitious target of selling 500,000 vehicles a year by 2025 to become one of the best-selling off-roader producers in the world.
Tank showed two models at the event that runs to April 28. The Tank 700 features competitive off-road capabilities, while the Tank 800 highlights luxury features.
The vehicles are built on Great Wall Motors' smart modular platform. It cost the carmaker five years and 20 billion yuan.
The platform offers 2.0-liter turborcharged and 3.0-liter turbocharged powertrain options.
They go with China's first locally developed 9-speed vertically positioned automatic transmission. Gasoline, plug-in hybrid and hybrid vehicles can be built on the platform.
Tank said it will produce compact vehicles, mid-large ones and full-size ones.
Besides Tank, Great Wall Motors showcased vehicles of its other brands as well, including Haval and Wey.
