Requirements
Non-Chinese citizen in good health and with a valid passport
Must hold a bachelor's degree.
Language Ability
Chinese-taught program:
HSK 5 above 180 for Science or Engineering , Economics or Management and Art;
HSK 5 above 210 for Humanities
HSK Exemptions:
Native speaker of Chinese;
The previous degree was fully taught in Chinese and the applicant has obtained a Chinese language certificate.
English-taught programs:
1. Native speakers of English
2. IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL IBT 90 or above received within the last two years(TOEFL MyBest™ Scores accepted)
3. The previous degree was fully taught in English.
Academic Requirement
1. Must be a bachelor's degree holder.
Graduates who did not receive their diplomas at the time of application should provide pre-graduation certificates issued by their schools or colleges to prove their ability to graduate smoothly and obtain their diplomas by July 2021.
2. Have relevant undergraduate academic background or have completed undergraduate-level courses relevant to intended graduate major, with GPA of 2.5 or above in the 4-Point GPA System.
3. Accepted by a prospective professor at Shanghai University.
Choose supervisor online when choosing a major in the online application system and be accepted by a prospective professor. (Note: choosing a supervisor is not required for the following Master's programs: School of Economics, MBA Center and SILC Business School. The colleges will arrange supervisors soon after the student registers at Shanghai University.)
4. Students applying to programs of arts must have a related academic background and submit a portfolio.
5. Some colleges, such as the MBA Center, give priority to applicants with work experience.
Application Materials(PDF or JPG form, etc)
ID Photo
Recent, bareheaded (within six months), full-face, blue-color background, one-inch certificate photo (390*570); no landscape photos or photos of daily life; in JPG format, less than 100K.
Passport Copy
A clear copy of your valid passport with your name, photo, birth date, place of birth, date of issue, and date of expiry;
Visa page is required for applicants who are not in their home country.
Selfie Video
A video including self-introduction and study plan in China shot by the applicants (within 50M, avi, mov, mp4 all accepted). The language of the video is up to the medium of instruction in the selected major (English or Chinese).
Highest Degree Certificate and Official Transcripts
The official certificate and transcripts are those that bear the facsimile signature of the registrar and seal of the issuing institution. If the originals are not in Chinese or English, they must be translated and notarized;
(*For applicants who haven’t graduated, pending graduation certificate and transcripts available before the application date are also acceptable. Official graduation certificate and transcripts of all grades shall be submitted immediately after being received.)
Language Proficiency Certificate
If the score sheet is not available at the time of application, applicants may upload a screen shot of their scores. But the original score sheet is required at the time of registration.
Statement of Financial Support (You can download it at https://apply.shu.edu.cn)
Two Letters of Recommendation with Signature
Written in English or Chinese by two different professors or associate professors from previous academic institutions, or work supervisors;
The referee’s signature and contact information are necessary.
Choose Supervisor Online and Get Accepted
(Please note that the Master programs in the School of Economics, the MBA center and SILC Business School, do not require choosing of a supervisor. The colleges will assign supervisors after registration at Shanghai University.)
Study Plan or Research Proposal in China
Written in English or Chinese (according to the teaching language of the program), more than 800 words, including research achievements so far (e.g. title and abstracts of graduation thesis or published paper), reasons for choosing SHU, study and research plan, future career plan, etc.
Certificate of No Criminal Record
Note: any applicant who cannot get a Certificate of No Criminal Record in their home country should sign the No criminal record Commitment with Shanghai University (You can download it at https://apply.shu.edu.cn).
Others (Refer to Departmental standards)
Applicants for art majors should provide at least two examples of artworks.
Please Note:
1. Documents not in Chinese or English should be accompanied with translations from notaries or issuing departments.
2. During application, it’s only necessary to upload scanned documents, but the original documents should be provided for reference upon registration.
Application and Admission
1. Shanghai University Security and Background Check (SBC) for International Students
The purpose of the SBC is to check whether the applicant’s personal condition is appropriate for entering the university. It includes questions about the applicant's personal life, education background and physical health. Please answer truthfully as the results will be recorded by university.
2. University Qualification Assessment (UQA) for International Students
The purpose of this assessment is to evaluate whether international students are ready to enter Shanghai University for degree programs and it is only compulsory for individual international applicants for degree programs.
The test is taken in the system: https://apply.shu.edu.cn and results will be taken as an important reference for admission.

3. Telephone Interview
After SBC and UQA, the recruitment staff will organize a telephone interview. The interview language depends on the course teaching language and its time length is 10-15 minutes.
4. Expert Committee Interview
Besides the telephone interview, the other interview will be conducted by Shanghai University’s experts for all graduates. The interview will be arranged informed week in advance.
5. Tuition Deposit Payment
All applicants for degree programs must pay the tuition deposit RMB 5000 after receiving the E-admission notice within 20 working days. If the payment is not made within 20 days, the application will be regarded as abandoned. Those who obtain a scholarship after deposit payment can have the payment refunded after registration. Note:
1. The tuition fee and tuition deposit for the programs of SILC Business School (SILC) should be paid to the bank account of SILC Business School (SILC).
2. The application fees are not refundable whether admitted or not. For information about the tuition deposit payment please refer to the attached Policies on Tuition Deposit Payment for Shanghai University International Students.
