Suzhou city in East China's Jiangsu province recently announced that it will make a list of 102 potential future unicorn companies, local media outlets reported.
Suzhou Industrial Park topped the list with 54 companies. Suzhou New District followed closely with 12 companies, while its total number of unicorn-to-be companies included on the list grew to 28.
A unicorn refers to a start-up valued at more than $1 billion within 10 years of its establishment. A unicorn-to-be, as the name suggests, refers to a company that is likely to become a unicorn in the near future.
The companies on the list are mainly involved in industries such as big data, automatic driving, information technology, e-commerce, speech recognition, high-end equipment manufacturing, new energy, and new materials.
Suzhou Everbright Photonics Co, a laser chip manufacturer that started operating in SND in 2012, was included on the list. Since its establishment, the company has strived to become a leader in the research and development, production, and sale of high-end laser chips.
Immune-Path Biotech, an innovative biotechnology company based in SND, was also included on the list. It was founded in 2017 and has been focusing on the research and development of new-type preventative and therapeutic vaccines for humans, as well as the industrialization of biomedical products.
Since 2018, Suzhou has cultivated 129 unicorn-to-be companies, 16 of which have gone public on domestic and foreign stock exchanges.
