A record 4,000 runners from around the country set off from the Yongning Gate of Xi'an City Wall at 8:30 am on April 10, marking the start of the 2021 Xi'an City Wall International Marathon.
This year's event included a half marathon of 21.1 kilometers, a 13.7-km run and a 5-km run.
After intensive competition, Wang Tao, Xiao Jing, He Fujun and Zhang Jingxia won the gold medals in the men's half marathon, women's half marathon, men's 13.7-km run and women's 13.7-km run, respectively.
As the world's only marathon held on a complete ancient city wall, Xi'an City Wall International Marathon has become a special event that enjoys global popularity. Since 1993, it has been successfully held 26 times.
Thanks to a livestream of the event, people were able to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Yongning Gate, Daming Palace, Yongxingfang, Beilin Museum and other scenic spots along the track and feel the atmosphere of China's 14th National Games and Xi'an's unique cultural tourism resources.
The winners’ medals differed from previous marathons. They combined elements of China's 14th National Games and imagery of the ancient capital of Xi'an, reflecting the historical significance of the Xi'an City Wall in a modern design style.
In addition, this year's event specially invited 100 disabled people to complete a 1-km run while accompanied by volunteers.
