Established in 1979, the Pingliang Museum is a comprehensive museum focused on preserving and promoting local history and culture. It is home to a collection of more than 15,000 pieces, of which 1,295 are national treasures. The collection includes prehistoric potteries, bronze wares from the Western Zhou Dynasty (c.11th century-771 BC), porcelains from the Song and Yuan dynasties (960-1368), bronze mirrors, shadow puppets from Gansu’s eastern areas, celebrity calligraphy and paintings and statuary artworks.

The museum moved to its present site from the city’s Baota Ridge in 2014. Covering an area of nearly 26,000 square meters, it features a spectacular design and is seen as an important local cultural landmark. Its four permanent exhibitions highlight the general and revolutionary history of the Pingliang area as well as local Buddhist statuary art and the Taoist culture of Kongtong Mountain. Meanwhile, the museum also hosts major displays from other renowned cultural institutes and launches public educational projects, greatly contributing to the local cultural industry.
