Covering more than 600 square meters, the Wuzai Bookstore in Nanjing city, East China’s Jiangsu province boasts more than 10,000 books and a community-based innovative "culture +X" shared space.
Why it’s special
The decoration with the exquisite layout is the most striking feature of the bookstore. Its furniture and photos dating back to the Republic of China (1912-49) make people feel at home. Compared with traditional brick-and-mortar bookstores, the Wuzai Bookstore has built a brand service system for family education, life aesthetics, and health. It also holds regular diversified cultural activities to draw local residents, such as reading salons, lectures about life aesthetics, artistic performances, consulting services, and art training programs.
In addition, the bookstore is home to a small art gallery where its full-time staffers tell stories and play games with children while their parents read books or participate in activities in the bookstore. The bookstore also serves coffee, drinks, and desserts with the flavor of the Republic of China, creating an area for food culture.
Since it opened to the public in 2017, the bookstore has invited many renowned artists and writers, including the Chinese American writer Geling Yan, the German writer Rainer Zitelmann, and the contemporary Chinese writer Liang Xiaosheng, to visit the bookstore and communicate with local residents.
