The only national maritime museum approved by the State Council of the People's Republic of China, the China Maritime Museum was built by the Ministry of Transport of China and Shanghai Municipal People's Government.

The museum occupies a land area of 24,830 square meters. It has a total floor space of 46,434 square meters, including an indoor display area of 21,000 square meters and an outdoor display area of 6,000 square meters.

The largest and highest-level museum of its kind in the country, it performs functions such as the collection of cultural relics, academic research, social education, exhibition and science popularization.

With the theme of "Navigation" and a large number of historical items, the museum is composed of six exhibition halls, two special exhibition zones, two science movie theaters and a children's amusement center.

The six exhibition halls include the Hall of Chinese Navigation History, the Hall of Ships, the Hall of Navigation and Ports, the Hall of Maritime Affairs and Sea Safety, the Hall of Seafarers and the Hall of Military Navigation.

The exhibition hall has an area of about 2,000 square meters, with about 260 physical exhibits, 130 photos and video materials, 70 documents, 420 ship models, and 10 various scenes and sand tables.

Among these exhibits, some in particular may draw your attention, such as an octant, an astronomical clock, crew certificates, ship nationality certificates and ship ownership certificates during the Republic of China (1912-49), plus East Coast nautical charts from 1875.

By contrasting the past, present and future of China's marine industry, the museum aims to display the brilliant civilization and fine traditions of the Chinese nation.
