The only themed museum honoring the Three Gorges migrants in China, the memorial is also an important center for the preservation, protection and research of history and culture of the Three Gorges Reservoir area. It features an exhibition area of 7,000 square meters and is home to 270,000 cultural relics. Receiving more than 500,000 visits annually since 2016, it is inscribed on the list of the national first level museums and AAAA scenic spots.
Designed by academician Cui Kai from China Architecture Design and Research Group, the memorial presents a unique appearance resembling the outcroppings that appear along the Yangtze River. The interior public space mirrors the continuous and steep precipices, reflecting the traditional settlements on both sides of the Three Gorges.
With seven units, the permanent display of the memorial employs chronicle sequences that draw a panorama of the migrant spirits, including the Three Gorges Dam project, the feat of the migration, the relocation of industrial and mining enterprises, urban and other facility reconstructions, protection of heritage sites and the environment and the great changes after the migration.
