Wuxi in East China's Jiangsu province saw its exports of medical instruments rise by 35 percent year-on-year to reach 3.96 billion yuan ($610.36 million) in 2020, according to data from Wuxi Customs.
Wuxi Yushou Medical Appliances Co Ltd is the first Chinese enterprise to produce and manufacture self-destructing syringes, with independent intellectual property rights and that are certified by the World Health Organization. More than 70 percent of its products are sold to Europe and the United States.
Miao Liping, the company's general manager, said that their new production plant will start operation this October to meet the increase in orders over the world. Its newly-developed syringe can be used for COVID-19 vaccines.
In light of the COVID-19 epidemic, Wuxi NEST Biotechnology Co Ltd focused on developing related medical instruments, such as virus samplers, nucleic acid detectors, kits, and saliva collectors, last year.
In July, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued authorization for emergency use of the disposable sampling tube produced by Wuxi NEST Biotechnology Co Ltd.
The product was then sold to various testing agencies in 50 states in the US and other countries that receive emergency authorization from the FDA, according to the company's marketing director Yang Jiajing.
Officials from the local commerce bureau said that in recent years, Wuxi's export of medical equipment is moving towards the high-end, with local companies paying more attention to developing independent technologies and international heavyweights investing in the city to expand production.
